Psalm 75

New International Version

Psalm 75^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

¹We praise you, God,
we praise you, for your Name is near;^(A)
people tell of your wonderful deeds.^(B)

²You say, “I choose the appointed time;^(C)
    it is I who judge with equity.^(D)
³When the earth and all its people quake,^(E)
    it is I who hold its pillars^(F) firm.^[b]
⁴To the arrogant^(G) I say, ‘Boast no more,’^(H)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.^[c]^(I)
⁵Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.^(J)’”

⁶No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
⁷It is God who judges:^(K)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.^(L)
⁸In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed^(M) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.^(N)

⁹As for me, I will declare^(O) this forever;
I will sing^(P) praise to the God of Jacob,^(Q)
¹⁰who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”^(R)

2 Kings 3:4-20

New International Version

⁴Now Mesha king of Moab^(A) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs^(B) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. ⁵But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled^(C) against the king of Israel. ⁶So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. ⁷He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight^(D) against Moab?”

“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

⁸“By what route shall we attack?” he asked.

“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.

⁹So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.^(E) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.

¹⁰“What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”

¹¹But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire^(F) of the Lord?”

An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha^(G) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.^[a]^(H)”

¹²Jehoshaphat said, “The word^(I) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

¹³Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”

“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”

¹⁴Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. ¹⁵But now bring me a harpist.”^(J)

While the harpist was playing, the hand^(K) of the Lord came on Elisha ¹⁶and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. ¹⁷For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,^(L) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. ¹⁸This is an easy^(M) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. ¹⁹You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”

²⁰The next morning, about the time^(N) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.^(O)

⁶Let no one deceive you^(A) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath^(B) comes on those who are disobedient.^(C) ⁷Therefore do not be partners with them.

⁸For you were once^(D) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light^(E) ⁹(for the fruit^(F) of the light consists in all goodness,^(G) righteousness and truth) ¹⁰and find out what pleases the Lord.^(H) ¹¹Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,^(I) but rather expose them. ¹²It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. ¹³But everything exposed by the light^(J) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. ¹⁴This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,^(K)
rise from the dead,^(L)
and Christ will shine on you.”^(M)

¹⁵Be very careful, then, how you live^(N)—not as unwise but as wise, ¹⁶making the most of every opportunity,^(O) because the days are evil.^(P) ¹⁷Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.^(Q) ¹⁸Do not get drunk on wine,^(R) which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,^(S) ¹⁹speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.^(T) Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, ²⁰always giving thanks^(U) to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
